About
The Blacksmiths Needle is a captivating piece of public art located on Newcastle's Quayside. This 7.6-meter tall conical steel sculpture was created in 1997 by the British Artist Blacksmiths Association. It features six sections, each symbolizing one of the five traditional senses and the 'sixth sense'. The sculpture's design incorporates maritime themes such as mermaids, shells, and sea creatures, reflecting Newcastle's rich nautical heritage. Visitors can appreciate the intricate hand-forged objects crafted during public 'forge-ins' held across the UK. The sculpture's open metalwork design allows for close observation of the craftsmanship, and its location offers scenic views of the River Tyne and the surrounding Quayside area.
