About
Siward's Howe Water Tower, built in 1955, is a remarkable structure in York. It was the largest water tower in the country at the time of its construction and holds 1 million gallons of water. The fine arts commission played a role in its design, adding to its architectural significance. A covered reservoir, holding 10 million gallons of water, was built next to it in 1977. Although not open to visitors, it remains an impressive sight.
The name 'Howe' originates from the Old Norse word 'Haugr,' meaning hill. This historical landmark is a testament to York's rich heritage and engineering prowess.
